If your dentist has referred you to a periodontist for a deep cleaning because of gum inflammation or infection, you’re far from alone. It’s estimated that more than half of all American adults age 30 and older have periodontal disease to some degree. It’s cause for concern, but not panic: Our periodontist at Russo Periodontics will be sure to make you feel comfortable and fully informed about our methods and treatments before we get started!
First, you’ve been referred to our practice because periodontists are specially trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating chronic inflammatory disease that affects your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. Although some general dentists provide treatment among patients with less pronounced cases, it’s customary for them to refer patients to a periodontist when the inflammation is more advanced.
So, what does a deep cleaning, also known as scaling, entail? During this non-surgical treatment, our periodontist will scale below the gum line to eliminate plaque — that pesky, sticky film that can build up and harden — and other disease-causing bacteria from spaces around the teeth known as “pockets.” Next, we’ll perform a procedure called root planing to smooth the tooth roots, giving plaque and bacteria fewer places to hide.
Do these treatments hurt? You can be sure that we’ll use the most effective anesthetics to keep discomfort to an absolute minimum during treatment, and inform you about the steps to take afterward to ensure prompt recovery. You’ll feel comfortable and cared for from the moment you arrive at our clean, state-of-the-art office.
Gum disease can have serious consequences, such as tooth and bone loss, but prompt treatment by our periodontist Russo Periodontics is a crucial step toward preventing your condition from progressing. There’s no need to delay; our modern techniques are more effective and comfortable than ever. Please don’t hesitate to contact our office today to arrange an appointment!
